Joe has dabbled in piano and choral music all of his life, but is relatively new to the mandolin and Celtic music. "I needed a niche," he says, explaining his choice of the mandolin. He says he likes to be around other musicians, even if he "can't always keep up." According to Joe, "most people can't tell who's good and who's not in a band. If the overall sound is good, most people will attribute that to all of the band members equally."

All joking aside, Joe brings a variety of talents to the band, including an excellent subtle technique on the djembe (an African drum), fine lead and harmonic vocals, and sound play on the mando. He moonlights on the guitar, and once in a while has been known to break out his second-hand accordion. Joe is also a major driver of the band's musical creativity, coming up with many ideas for arrangements as well as supplying most of the band's sense of humor. He also does a Bob Dylan impression that is nothing short of uncanny. (back)
