Scott began playing the pipes in 1982, studying highland piping primarily under the tutelage of Pipe Major Robert Mitchell, the well-respected director of a number pipe bands and a long-time member of the pan-Celtic folk ensemble Iona. After years playing in pipe & drum corps and engaging in some solo competition, Scott began studying bellows piping and Irish whistles with Ian Lawther, a world-class exponent of bagpipes of all descriptions.

With the Rum & Kidney Men, Scott mainly plays the Scottish smallpipes and Border bagpipes, as well as a variety of whistles. He has also been known to rattle the bones a bit and croak out a song or two -- as he puts it, "I've suffered for my music; now it's your turn!" (back)
