Please have a listen to the recordings below; they should give you a pretty good idea of our sound, though our band has seen some line-up changes since some of the tracks were cut.
For those who are interested, in addition to the audio tracks listed immediately below, we also have a few live tracks and video clips.)
We recorded our demo CD in May 2005 at the Audio Express recording studio in Silver Spring, Maryland. From that CD, we've uploaded tracks in mp3 format to this site; please download them and have a listen. The musicians on the five demo mp3s are Chris Brown (fiddle & vocals), Scott Carr (Border pipes, Scottish smallpipes, low whistle, bones & vocals), Joe Kaufmann (mandolin & vocals), and Tom Pierson (12-string guitar & vocals).
The Boys of Malin/The Gravel Walks (1.2 MB) -- a pair of traditional reels
from Ireland, chosen by Chris.
Bowland Bridge/The Butterdish (1.9 MB) -- an exquisite air and reel composed by Jonny Dyer, a UK folk guitarist who is known for his work alongside piper and flautist Vicki Swan and as a member of the band Serious Kitchen. We'd like to thank Jonny for kindly giving us permission to record these tunes, and we urge anyone reading this to check out the links in this graph. Many excellent tunes by Jonny and Vicki are available at their site.
Whiskey In The Jar (1.3 MB) -- well, we promised you four-part harmony and here it is. Although this tune is something of a chestnut, we rather enjoy singing it. Call it a guilty pleasure....
I Will Go Home To Kintail (1.6 MB) -- a traditional pipe tune which Scott picked up from an old Tannahill Weavers record. We fooled around with the tune for some time, and then Chris came up with a nice little harmony on the violin, so we decided to record it.
The Hundred Pound Drop/Debbie's Reel (1 MB) -- a pair of excellent reels by Ian Lawther. Ian is the one who taught Scott to play bellows pipes, so ultimately all of this can be blamed on him, ha ha. The first reel commemorates a remarkable day of busking in which a passing woman left five twenty-pound notes in Ian's pipe box. We play the tune in the hope that this sort of thing will happen more often, and our thanks to Ian for his kind permission to record this set. Check out his website linked in this graph.
We also have live audio tracks from some of our recent shows, in MPEG 4 (m4a) format:
Go To Berwick, Johnny/Peacock Followed the Hen/The Feticheuse (1 MB) -- the set begins with two traditional Northumbrian tunes Scott picked up from Ian Lawther. The third tune (one of Scott's compositions) was named in honor of Redmond O'Hanlon's book No Mercy, which concerned the author's travels in the Congo in search of a legendary lake monster. The narrative opens with memorable scene involving O'Hanlon, his travelling companion, and a Brazzaville feticheuse (i.e. a witch, or fortune teller). The musicians are Amy Jenkins (fiddle), Scott Carr (border pipes), Joe Kaufmann (mandolin), and Nick Caine (guitar).
Seven Braw Gowns (1 MB) -- a nice traditional Scottish song. The musicians on this track are Amy Jenkins (voice), Nick Caine (guitar), Joe Kaufmann (mandolin) and Scott Carr (C whistle).
The Bean Sidh (750 KB) -- a traditional Irish reel. The musicians are Amy Jenkins (fiddle), Scott Carr (Irish whistle), Joe Kaufmann (mandolin), and Nick Caine (guitar).
A Maid in Bedlam (2 MB) -- a lovely traditional English song. The musicians on this track are Amy Jenkins (voice), Nick Caine (guitar), Joe Kaufmann (mandolin) and Scott Carr (djembe).
The Sound of Sleat (800 KB) -- a nice little traditional Scottish reel, with a harmony arrangement by Bonnie Rideout. The musicians are Amy Jenkins (fiddle), Scott Carr (Scottish smallpipes), Nick Caine (guitar), and Joe Kaufmann (mandolin).
(Unknown)/Goddesses/Chestnuts (1 MB) -- a French waltz, the title of which we do not know, followed by two dances from the Playford collection (Goddesses and Chestnuts, which is also called Doves Figgory). The musicians on this recording are Chris Brown (fiddle), Scott Carr (Scottish smallpipes), Bill Cornell (guitar), Amy Jenkins (viola), and Joe Kaufmann (mandolin).
Come Give Me Your Hand (1 MB) -- an Irish waltz. The musicians on the recording are Chris Brown (fiddle), Scott Carr (low whistle), Bill Cornell (guitar), Amy Jenkins (viola), and Joe Kaufmann (mandolin).
Back to TopFor those who enjoy the luxury of a broadband connection (as well as those with the patience of Job), we have uploaded a few video clips from our live shows. These were for the most part taken with a hand-held digital camera, and have been ground through various Windows programs, so the sound and picture quality are necessarily limited. Nevertheless, we hope they will give listeners an idea of what our shows are like. For each video clip, the file size and type are noted. Enjoy!
The Ookpik Waltz/The Merry Boys of Greenland (.wmv, 12.9 MB) -- this is the band's own arrangement of a fine traditional waltz and reel. The musicians in the recording are Chris Brown (fiddle), Scott Carr (Scottish smallpipes in D), Bill Cornell (guitar), and Joe Kaufmann (mandolin).
The Hundred Pound Drop/Debbie's Reel (.wmv, 9 MB) -- a live version of the two reels by Ian Lawther recorded above. The musicians are Chris Brown (fiddle), Scott Carr (Border pipes), Bill Cornell (guitar), and Joe Kaufmann (mandolin). And if you happen to have a monster connection, you may download a (comparatively) high-quality version of the video in a 67 MB .avi format.
Go To Berwick, Johnny/Peacock Followed the Hen/The Feticheuse (.avi, 36 MB) -- the set begins with two traditional Northumbrian tunes Scott picked up from Ian Lawther. The musicians are Chris Brown (fiddle), Amy Jenkins (viola), Scott Carr (Border pipes), Bill Cornell (djembe), and Joe Kaufmann (guitar).
Goddesses/Chestnuts (Doves Figgory) (.avi, 16 MB) -- two tunes from the Playford collection, entitled Goddesses and Chestnuts. The latter tune is also called Doves Figgory. The musicians are Chris Brown (fiddle), Amy Jenkins (viola), Scott Carr (Scottish smallpipes), Bill Cornell (guitar), and Joe Kaufmann (mandolin).
Wee Totum Fogg (.avi, 35 MB) -- a nifty little Northumbrian variation set. The title of the tune evidently comes from the British nursery rhyme "Wee Totum Fogg sits on a creepie; half an ell of grey wad mak his coat and breekie." In other words, Wee Totum Fogg is a poor fellow who wears cheap clothing. The musicians are Chris Brown (fiddle), Amy Jenkins (viola), Scott Carr (Border pipes), Joe Kaufmann (mandolin), and Bill Cornell (guitar).
